Shakespeare and Company

A Paris Left-Bank tradition in the shadow of Nôtre Dame, this bohemian English-language bookstore was opened by American George Whitman in 1951 in a crumbling 17th-century building that was once part of a monastery. He died in 2011 but the shop and its café are now run by his daughter. Generations of writers have read, talked, eaten and even slept in the shop among the books, and it remains a must-see for literary fans.
