What is microblading? A Beginner’s guide to brow grooming

Wondering what microblading is? It’s the technique everyone is talking about, and here top microblade artist to the stars Silvia Delbahar explains what it is and how it’s done

Beautiful eyebrows say a lot about a woman’s face but sometimes the right look is hard to achieve. Many of today’s defined and disciplined eyebrows  – especially the ones gracing celebrities on the catwalk – are achieved using the technique of microblading, but what exactly is involved in this process and how is it done?

London beauty therapist Soheila Delbahar – known to her clients as Silvia – owns and manages  SD Brows, specializing in creating beautiful brows and lashes both for private clients in their own homes, or from the upscale Lisa Franklin clinic in Knightsbridge. With many celebrities and even royals on her list, she offers microblading alongside other techniques for shaping brows, such as lamination and threading.

Now Silvia is planning a trip to KSA in November 2021 to bring her signature styling to new clients. She’ll be visiting Riyadh and MCC members can make priority reservations via our bookings page.

As well as brow grooming, Silvia has also branched out into practising reiki – the ancient Japanese art of ‘energy healing’ – under the business name SD Reconnection, which will also be offered when she visits Ryadh.

We caught up with Silvia to ask for her definitive guide to microblading and its benefits.

You’re known for your skill in shaping eyebrows. What made you specialize in brows in particular?

I’ve always had a passion for eyebrows. The minute I look at someone, I can see the finished effect. I analyse each hair. I communicate with brows. I speak their language! I feel I have an intuitive understanding of how a client wants their brows to look.

How would you define microblading?

It’s a technique using a hand-held tool made of several tiny needles to add semi-permanent pigment to the skin. Each hair stroke is made by hand using a blade to ‘draw’ fine hair strokes onto the skin, whereas eyebrow tattoos are made with a machine and single needle.

How does it differ from a tattoo?

It’s a semi-permanent make-up (SPMU), unlike tattooing, which is permanent. Microblading puts  pigment into the second layer of the skin, the dermis, whereas tattooing goes deeper and inserts pigment into the third layer of the skin, the hypodermis.

Can any beauty parlour do it?

No, only a certified SPMU artist. I learned microblading in Iran for the first time in 2014 but I took my professional certificate in Liverpool, England.

Is it suitable for everyone?

Yes it is – for men as well! But I wouldn’t recommend it, for example, for young girls, who can have perfect full brows by using the right products and taking care of them.

If a client asked if the procedure were painful, how would you reassure them?

Microblading is not painful as I apply plenty of numbing cream to the area before starting the procedure.

How long does it last?

It depends on a client’s skin. It lasts six to nine months on oily skin and 12 to 18 months on dry skin. A touch-up session is suggested after four to six weeks after the first microblading session.

How long do the brows take to recover?

Everyone heals differently, but generally speaking, about 30 days. It’s essential to look after the brows, though, and keep them scrupulously clean. During the first 2-4 days a light scab forms, which will then take about 10 days to flake away. From then until about day 30, the skin fully heals and a touch-up session will perfect the shape and check the colour.

Is there anything to watch out for?

Yes, don’t book your first microblading less than 1-2 months before a special occasion! You need to allow time for healing and then the touch-up appointment. Microblading may not be suitable for people with certain skin conditions. Check the information on my website.

You’re also a reiki master. What drew you to take it up?

A long-term problem drew me to reiki but when I learned more about it, I decided to become a practitioner myself. I trained in London in 2016.

What do you see as its main benefits?

There are lots of benefits but mainly it reconnects you with your inner self so that you experience utter peace after a few sessions.

What is the secret to your success with reiki?

I believe my intuitive ability and understanding of human needs are the keys to my success.

You’ll be offering lash lifts in KSA, as well. What is a lash lift?

A lash lift is an impressively quick alternative to semi-permanent eyelashes that enhance your natural lashes giving them the illusion of length and volume.

What are the benefits of a lash lift?

The results are immediate and last 4-6 weeks, and best of all, they require little or no maintenance. You’ll also save time, as you won’t need to worry about mascara!
