A unique guide to a unique city.
Abha is one of the most unexpected and rewarding destinations in Saudi Arabia - sitting in the Asir Mountains at about 2,200m elevation, with cool weather, lush landscapes, and a very different vibe from the desert cities. It is historic, breathtakingly scenic, and outdoorsy — a blend of nature, heritage, and local traditions. It's also a great chance to escape the heat, offering a cooler, fresher climate for much of the year.
Abha's voice in the region is slowly growing as people become more aware of the cultural significance of its UNESCO-recognised art and architecture, and parks with views that defy belief. We've pinpointed a few things you can't miss when visiting this cloud-scraping city.
Al Sahab Park

Known as the "Park Above The Clouds", it's nickname says it all, with some of the most other-worldly views you will ever see from a national park. Even from the scenic route up to the serene picnic spots, where people wait for the mist to roll in and capture those breath-taking photos. Early morning and late afternoon give the best cloud effects, but wrap up as the weather can shift quickly! Located in Al Soudah, just a 20 minute drive from central Abha.
New Abha Cable Car

Also referred to as the Abha Al Jadidah Cable Car Station, it starts from the Abha Al Jadidah area and goes up to Green Mountain (Jabal Thera) about 400 meters above the new Abha Resort. A round trip takes about 30 minutes, with unbelievable views over the local hills and valleys, and an unparalleled view of Lake Sadd from above. There are other cable cars in Asir also, that take in different views of the region.
Shamsan Castle

Also known as the Ottoman Qishlah, this is a historic military fortress located just northeast of Abha. Perched atop Mount Shamsan, the castle offers panoramic views of the surrounding mountains and valleys. Shamsan Castle once served as a strategic military outpost during the Ottoman era, its primary function to defend the city of Abha from northern approaches. The castle's design reflects the architectural heritage of the Asir region, showcasing traditional construction techniques and materials. The Castle underwent massive restoration in 2021 to preserve its position as a visitor attraction.
Rijal Almaa Heritage Village

About 40km southwest of Abha, this UNESCO World Heritage Site is over 400 years old, known for its distinctive Asiri architecture and cultural influence. Within the white-quartz-lined walls is a rich tapestry of historical wall paintings known as al-Qatt al-Asiri, and the local village has thrived as an artistic epicentre with markets, workshops and small museums celebrating the artistic history of the region. The mix of the mountainous terrain and the colourful, ornate buildings creates some of the best photography opportunities in all of the Kingdom.
Al Muftaha Village

Nestled in the heart of Abha is this vibrant cultural landmark, not only home to traditional Asiri architecture but also now a hub for the region's contemporary art. Founded in the late 18th Century by traditional and modest means, much has been done to preserve the interconnected mud and stone constructions, and now thrives as a home to art galleries and various performance spaces, including Talal Maddah Theatre, one of the largest in the country, and its famous crafts market every Tuesday. It's also home to King Fahd Cultural Center, and The Art Street - see below:
The Art Street

This open-air gallery has transformed the area into a dynamic fusion of traditional Asiri architecture and contemporary street art, making it a must-visit destination for art enthusiasts and travellers alike. The walls along The Art Street are covered with vibrant murals depicting scenes from daily life, traditional crafts, and abstract art, offering a visual journey through the region's artistic evolution. It's also home to many events such as street markets, exhibitions and live workshops.
Andalus Park

Located in the Al Nuzhah district of Abha, it is a tranquil escape from the vibrant Prince Sultan Road, or "Restaurant Street", that it sits alongside. Apart from the panoramic views of the surrounding mountains and city buildings, there are open trails for leisurely walks, sports facilities and children's play areas.
Abha Palace Hotel & Spa

Abha Palace Hotel is a distinguished 5-star destination situated on the edge of Al-Sad Lake in Abha and close to Abha airport. It is closely linked to many of the cities major attractions and is even linked to two of the local cable cars that provide direct connections to places such as Jebel Zerrah and Abu Khayal. This hotel is also home to a luxurious spa and wellness center, to ensure you can relax between the various trips and cultural experiences that Abha has to offer.
