Each spring, Japan transforms under a canopy of cherry blossoms and people from all over the world visit to discover Japan under a whole new perspective. And it's not just Tokyo and Kyoto - there is a rich, diverse choice of cities and regions that combine stunning trails with Japan's history and culture and art.

Below is a spotlight on some of the most popular choices and how to incorporate the blossom trails into a cultural getaway. MCC can help you plan an itinerary of diverse activities, excursions, reservations and experiences. If you're planning a trip to Japan, we hope some of these ideas inspire your adventure!

TOKYO

Tokyo is one of the most exciting places to experience cherry blossom season, where traditional and modern experiences sit side by side. Stroll along the Sumida River for classic sakura views, then slow things down with a carefully prepared tea ceremony in a peaceful setting. For something more contemporary, teamLab Borderless offers an immersive take on nature through digital art. Evenings can be spent in Ginza, where elegant shopping streets and refined dining round off the day.

KYOTO

Kyoto is almost picture-perfect during blossom season, especially along the Philosopher’s Path, where petal-filled canals are framed by temple gardens. The city is also ideal for discovering traditional crafts, with artisan workshops offering a closer look at ceramics, textiles and more. Dining is a highlight, with kaiseki meals showcasing seasonal ingredients in a thoughtful, balanced way. In areas like Gion, historic streets and soft evening lighting add to the atmosphere.

OSAKA

Osaka brings a lively edge to cherry blossom season, with some of the city’s most impressive views found around Osaka Castle, where trees surround the historic grounds. Kema Sakuranomiya Park offers a more relaxed setting, with long riverside paths lined with blossoms. As the day shifts into evening, Dotonbori’s bright lights and canal views create a striking contrast to the softness of the season. Select temples and gardens also host night-time illuminations, offering a different way to experience the blooms.

FUKUOKA

Fukuoka offers a more relaxed approach to cherry blossom season, with plenty of space to explore at your own pace. Riverside trails and landmarks like Ohori Park are ideal for easy walks under the blossoms. The city’s local markets give a taste of Kyushu’s food culture, with fresh, seasonal dishes to try along the way. Just outside the city, Dazaifu Shrine combines history and nature, with blossoms adding to its traditional setting.

NARA

Nara offers one of Japan’s most memorable cherry blossom settings, where historic sites and nature come together in a very accessible way. Many of its UNESCO-listed temples sit within open parkland, where free-roaming deer are a familiar sight. Todaiji Temple is a standout, both for its scale and its setting among the trees. Nearby, Kasuga Taisha Shrine is known for its lantern-lined paths, which feel especially atmospheric during blossom season.

KANAZAWA

Kanazawa is a great choice for a quieter, more considered cherry blossom trip, centred around the beautifully maintained Kenrokuen Garden. The city’s historic districts, including former samurai and geisha areas, are easy to explore and add context to the season. Food is another highlight, with Kaga cuisine offering a refined take on local ingredients. For a modern contrast, the 21st Century Museum of Contemporary Art brings a fresh perspective to the city’s traditional feel.
